Unity: The new 4K tech demo is truly impressive

While waiting to see if Unity Game engine will be sold to a well-known US mobile app service developer, the team behind the engine continues to work and unveiled a new tech demo at SIGGRAPH 2022. This is nothing new: the engines are frequently “advertised” with special demos aimed at demonstrating the engines’ potential.

Unity: The new 4K tech demo is truly impressive

The PS5-specific Lion tech demo is the most recent version from Unity. It was made by utilizing a number of tools that are compatible with the engine, and it is undeniably downright impressive. Weta Digital, SpeedTree, Ziva, and SyncSketch are a few of these (recently acquired by the company that makes the graphics engine). The tech demo was displayed in 4K and 60 frames per second, but what really caught viewers’ attention was the lion’s hair, which was rendered using a brand-new Weta Digital technique specifically designed for rendering hair and furs called Wig.

As stated by the development team, Wig really is a different way to work. Sara Hansen, who holds the role of Technical Artist in the company, was responsible for revealing the functioning of the tool. “Wig is probably the best tool I’ve ever used. Creating fur and hair is really quicker than it used to be. With Wig we were able to create everything in a short time and with an excellent quality of detail ”, the words of Hansen declared on the sidelines of the presentation of the demo. The video of the demo is available immediately below: are a few seconds, but they really leave you breathless.

The Unity demo, while impressive, is still stuck at 30 frames per second. A necessary compromise, if the target hardware is that of PS5, still not inclined to support certain games at 60 frames per second without compromising graphics quality and resolution.
