The UK government may soon begin keeping an eye on immigrants who have been found guilty of crimes using face recognition smart watches. According to The Guardian, the offenders would have to scan their faces up to five times each day. This fall could see the implementation of the measures.

According to documents published by The Guardian, those subject to the requirements would need to snap pictures of themselves throughout the day and have their movements monitored constantly. The images and the ones the Home Office has on record will be compared. A manual check would be necessary to confirm the person’s identity if the government’s computers can’t do so. According to the Home Office and Ministry of Justice plans, the photographs will be kept for up to six years together with the names, nationalities, and birthdates of migrants.

Only foreign nationals with criminal convictions will be subject to the requirements. Others, like asylum seekers, apparently won’t be under this kind of government scrutiny.

To acquire “non-fitted devices” for the Home Office’s Satellite Tracking Service, the government awarded a £6 million ($7.2 million) contract to Buddi Limited in May. The contract states that “A non-fitted device solution will provide a more proportionate approach of monitoring specific cohorts over extended periods of time than fitted tags.” “Instead of being fitted to an individual, these devices will periodically verify biometric data.” Buddi has censored the quantity and price of the smart watches it will offer.

The Home Office has not made it clear that it will track deported migrants using smart watches with face recognition capabilities. The Home Office will soon introduce a “portable biometrically accessed device” that will operate with ankle bands, according to an official who talked to The Guardian.
