There might be a new homepage experience coming soon.

The default Google Search web page is easy to use and intuitive. It provides choices to view the page in several languages or go to another Google service, as well as a prominently placed search box. Although some of us like the clean, straightforward appearance, Google occasionally has the urge to switch things up and fill the empty space with something else. Google took things a step further in February when they added relevant cards to the homepage. A small number of people claim to be seeing these cards once more right now, suggesting a probable wider rollout.

Google’s test in February showed six new cards on the homepage

Six card-shaped widgets started showing up at the bottom of some people’s Search homepage earlier this year, as we reported. You may find information about items you could look up in each widget, including the weather, trends, what to watch, stocks, nearby events, and COVID-19 news. A toggle allowed you to entirely hide the cards if you didn’t want them to be seen at all. The cards expanded when your cursor was over them. For a few days, the cards could be seen on the homepage until they disappeared.

A new floating prompt with the title “Meet the new Google.com” is accompanying the cards’ return, according to recent tweets, according to 9to5Google. To customise the homepage widgets, which are now squares rather than the rectangles that users reported seeing in February, you are requested to sign in. After logging in, a different window appears where you can choose among cards pertaining to the following subjects:

  • What to Watch

The card widgets we saw in February were oddly square (not rectangular like some reports claim). Since we previously encountered the experience, Google has made some changes as well. The number of cards added now appears to depend on the size of your screen, and there is no longer a method to scroll horizontally or vertically to view the remaining cards.

We think this is a classic a/b test to observe how users react to the change because relatively few individuals reported experiencing the new homepage experience in February, and we haven’t yet seen them on our devices. But these trials typically portend a larger release.
