Amazon has agreed to acquire Cloostermans, a company that manufactures pallet-stacking robots for its warehouses. Amazon claims to be using Cloostermans’ technology, which can also package products, from Belgium.

After the acquisition is completed, Cloostermans’ 200 or so employees will join Amazon’s Global Robotics division in Europe and will most likely devote their time solely to developing technology for Amazon’s needs. “By focusing Cloostermans’ deep experience in engineering, machinery, and robotics,” Amazon said in a press release. The company has previously stated that it believes that increasing the number of robots will improve worker safety.

Amazon has been increasing the number of robots in its warehouses in order to increase automation. It unveiled Proteus, its first autonomous warehouse robot, in June. The device can move carts loaded with packages on its own.

While Amazon has been increasing its reliance on robots at its fulfilment centres for several years, the Cloostermans acquisition comes just a few months after employees at a Staten Island facility became the first Amazon warehouse workers to win a union election. In 2019, the company stated that it does not expect automation to replace human workers in warehouses for at least a decade.
