Tesla recently submitted documentation to Texas indicating its intention to construct a battery-grade lithium hydroxide refining facility. According to Tesla, it will be “the first of its kind in North America.” The company has already applied to the Texas Comptroller’s Office for tax relief. Tesla further stated that, if completed, the facility will convert mined raw materials into materials suitable for battery manufacture. To support large-scale production, the lithium hydroxide produced would be transported by truck and rail to Tesla’s multiple battery manufacturing facilities. The lithium refinery will aid in the production of battery plants for electric vehicles.

The Tesla lithium refinery will begin operations in 2024.

Furthermore, Tesla claims that the facility will utilise an innovative process that will use fewer hazardous chemicals than traditional processes. It will also generate byproducts that can be recycled. The building project will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022. According to reports, commercial production will not begin until the fourth quarter of 2024.

Elon Musk tweeted on July 14 this year that lithium batteries are the new oil, confirming the value of lithium in the modern economy. On Tesla’s earnings call in July, he also urged entrepreneurs to enter the lithium refining business. Musk claims that the lithium competition cannot be lost, and that it is a business similar to printing money. Musk tweeted earlier this month, “Lithium prices have reached unbelievable levels!” Unless we improve our costs, Tesla may have to go directly into (lithium) mining and mining on a large scale. Lithium is not in short supply because it is found almost everywhere on the planet, but extraction/refining is time-consuming.”

It’s worth noting that Tesla supplier Piedmont Lithium, a well-known US lithium mine company, recently warned that the United States “doesn’t have enough” lithium to meet electric vehicle goals. China is currently the dominant player in the lithium refining industry. China currently has more than half of the world’s production capacity.
